Battery Park City Authority Seeks New Auditor

The Battery Park City Authority is hiring a new auditor, three months after a report slammed the authority for wasting $300,000 on parties and fancy lunches.

The authority plans to hire an outside firm to perform its internal audits from now on, to ensure that the audits are independent and thorough, board members said at an Audit Committee meeting Wednesday.

“When you have a person who is part of the organization reporting internally, it is a difficult process,” said Robert Mueller, chairman of the authority’s Audit Committee.

In the past, the authority had an internal auditor, Roy Villafane, who reported to Lisa Miller, vice president of internal audit and compliance.

The inspector general’s scathing report on the authority last December criticized both Villafane and Miller for inappropriately documenting the car and driver perks that former authority Chairman James Gill received.

Miller still works for the authority, but Villafane retired about six months ago and the authority never replaced him.

Best Blacktops – Battery Park City

Downtown Express photo by John Bayles

West Thames Park was picked by Downtown Express as one of the best blacktops in the city siting, “this recently opened Battery Park City facility offers courts that are both beautiful and strangely designed.” The two half court basketball facilities with the uncommon multicolor paint choices seem only to attract youngsters in the area. The two courts have different height nets encouraging the shorter-net court to fill up with elementary age children by early afternoon and overflowing to the surrounding jungle gym. We are excited that our blacktop was picked as one of the best in the city. You can read about the other wining blacktops here.

BPC’s Greenmarket Is Off To A Strong Start

Thursday (July 8th) was the first day of the new Battery Park City greenmarket in World Financial Center plaza. The market attracted over 500 people and was seen as a success by many of the sellers. The market is host to 10 produce, wine and flower booths and the only complaint by customers is that it closes at 6 p.m.

We are excited for the new market in the area and hopefully in time they will have enough growth to stay open a little longer for those of us who get home a bit later. The downtown express has more on the story here.
