Security Screening For Statue of Liberty Leaving BPC

For years the lines and security for Liberty Island have found their home in Battery Park and now they are working to resolve the issue and return the park to an actual park. One idea is to keep the metal detectors on Ellis Island and screen visitors there. While a decision will not be made for at least six months on the move of the security, the National Park Service plans to remove the big baracades at the entrance and all across the park and replace them with ropes similar to those you would find at a movie theatre. Hopefully, this will help make the park feel more like a park again. You can read the full story from dnainfo.com here.

New Term For Downtown Area

It feels like everyday someone comes up with a new abbreviation for an area of Manhattan (SoHo, BoCoCa, DUMBO, and so on.). Here comes another one and it encompasses Battery Park City. A marketing group in the city has picked CanDo (pronounced “can due”), short for Canal Downtown which they would like to be the name for the area south of Canal Street. The marketing group says it is an attempt to give the area more a attractive feeling for those visiting as right now the majority of tourist do not lodge in our area unless they have work on Wall St. The marketing group plans to put out maps with the labeled CanDo area at local hotels in the beginning of the year. So far CanDo has received mixed reviews. We would love to know what you think. You can read the full story here.

Battery Park P.S./I.S. 276 Take Green To A New Level

Battery Park city’s new P.S./I.S. 276 school opened as the greenest in Manhattan but just how green or sustainable are they? The school had solar panels installed that will generate 50 percent of their electricity. Students are instructed to use the double-fulsh toilets, using only the more water option when needed. There are reminders places all over the school about when to recycle, when to reuse and how taking the stairs is good for the environment and each of us. Yesterday principal Terri Ruyter took it to a new level by sticking her hand into a large tub of compostable dirt/soil with hard working earthworms devouring scraps. Teaching the students now how they can help the environment is an important part of P.S./I.S. 276. You can read the full story here.
